BIO

Spencer Jones is a percussionist, timpanist, drummer, and music educator living in Omaha, NE. He directs the percussion program at Omaha Conservatory of Music and performs regularly as an extra musician with the Omaha and Kansas City Symphonies. Additionally, he has performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, Des Moines Symphony, the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, the Quad City Symphony, and the New World Symphony of Miami Beach, FL.

A native of Broken Arrow, OK, he attended Oklahoma State University, studying with Wayne Bovenschen, and then moved to Kansas City, MO to study with Christopher McLaurin at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory, where he earned the master’s degree and spent two years as a post-graduate student. Spencer received additional orchestral and chamber music training as a fellow at Music Academy of the West, National Orchestral Institute, and the Texas Music Festival, and he is a two-time alumnus of the Cloyd Duff Timpani Masterclass. In addition to his principal teachers, he has been privileged to study and perform with generous and talented mentors, including Joe Petrasek (Atlanta Symphony Orchestra), Matthew Strauss (Houston Symphony), Ted Atkatz (formerly Chicago Symphony Orchestra), Michael Werner (Seattle Symphony), and others.

In addition to his duties at Omaha Conservatory of Music, Spencer teaches drums and percussion at Dordt College and coaches the percussion sections of Omaha Area Youth Orchestras. He is an in-demand clinician and ensemble coach, and has a successful record of school percussion instruction, including three seasons as a marching percussion instructor with the Bands of America Grand National Champion "Pride of Broken Arrow" at Broken Arrow Senior High School in Broken Arrow, OK.

When not working, Spencer prefers to spend his time enjoying excellent food and drink with his wife, running, reading, Oklahoma State football and basketball (Go Pokes!) and devoutly following Major League Soccer and the United States National Soccer Teams. Spencer was a radio disc jockey in college and has been a fervent last.fm user since February 2005. Check out his current favorite albums on the Spotify playlist below.
